Genius Loci · L'âme du lieu · An olfactory and artisanal collection

The memory of a place, distilled into matter.

Genius Loci restores the soul of a territory through objects and scent. ORB, its first object: a metal body dressed by artisans, and a sphere that breathes fragrance at a touch.

I · THE HOUSE

Genius Loci does not perfume a space. It restores the soul of a territory.

From the Latin genius loci, the spirit of a place. Not a décor, not a reconstructed atmosphere: a presence that pre-exists, waiting to be recognised. Every territory carries an invisible soul in its materials, its know-how, its silences, its singular light. Places are not visited. They are felt. Only scent and touch come close to the essential.

II · THE OBJECT

ORB. A pomander, continued.

Olfactory, refined, bespoke: ORB is the first object of the Genius Loci collection, a fragrance diffuser and a contemporary sculpture in one piece, where material, technology and gesture meet without one ever ranking above another.

Inside each piece, a rechargeable sphere holds perfumed beads. Inspired by Renaissance pomanders, ORB does not quote a historical object: it continues its purpose, that of a container able to carry and diffuse an invisible presence.

Touch it, and the object breathes. A dry-air system releases the fragrance without heat or combustion. The technology stays invisible, integrated at the heart of the structure, in service of a continuous and silent experience.

Conceived as a durable object, ORB works on a principle of recharging and reuse: continuity of use over accumulation.

III · SURFACES

Before the object, matter and gesture.

Genius Loci works with artisans able to engage with material in its most living, unpredictable form, to create bespoke dressings for the metal structure of ORB. Each surface is an encounter with matter: its resistance, its irregularities, its way of turning intention into something partly beyond control.

No workshop is asked to reproduce an icon. Each is invited to express its own knowledge through the object, and nothing is imposed in advance: form appears through listening, atelier visits, and a gradual sense of what the material allows and resists. Each piece carries a degree of uniqueness that cannot be entirely replicated.

Playful combinationRigid rings and shell-like forms, made to fit and attach onto the cylindrical metal body. One formal vocabulary, interpreted across six material families, each with its own techniques, constraints and gestures.

IV · THE RITUAL OF CREATION

One place, one collection.

Genius Loci belongs to no industry. It convenes several, for the time of a series, around the soul of a place. From each encounter a collection is born: an object unique in its form, released in limited number, and a fragrance that is its liquid soul.

01ImmersionFor each collection, our artistic director sets out. She chooses a place, a country, a region, a landscape, for its history, its geology, its light, its memory.
02The artisansShe meets those who have worked the material for generations: artisans of the gesture, keepers of a knowledge handed down.
03A local artistSometimes a local artist joins the conversation, a sculptor, a ceramicist, whose eye becomes part of the collection.
04The resourcesShe uncovers what the territory offers: vegetal, mineral, textile.
05A noseShe invites a perfumer to compose from what she found. One fragrance then runs through the whole collection, an invisible thread linking each object to the place it comes from.
V · FRAGRANCES

One fragrance, one atmosphere.

Each collection carries an exclusive fragrance, composed by an independent perfumer from the territory itself. Landscapes, natural materials, sensory memories. Change the sphere, and the room changes.

REFILL

The beads are replaced. The sphere remains.

Sealed sachets of perfumed beads, sized for the volume of the sphere, preserve olfactory intensity and prolong the experience. Perforated, engraved or openworked like a piece of jewellery, the sphere itself is durable, personal, evolving.

VI · THE INSTRUMENT

A calm instrument.

The ORB application manages one or several diffusers: diffusion, its rhythm, and the optional light that lends the piece a gentle, meditative aura. Set it once, then let the object breathe on its own. Paper by day, ember by night.

VII · THE COLLECTIONS

Rare, anchored, alive.

Every collection unfolds a family of pieces: sculptures, diffusing objects, useful or purely contemplative forms, each born from a dialogue between the artisan's hand, the artist's vision and the territory's material. Different in form, united in essence.

Closed editionsProduced in small quantity, so that each piece remains what it is. When the series is sold out, the collection closes.
Crafted for diffusionThickness, porosity and airflow are considered together with the artisan, so the fragrance circulates freely, without blockage or oversaturation.
BespokeORB also exists as unique pieces and capsule collections, tailored for specific spaces, brands or events. Interchangeable spheres and dressings let a single object evolve with its setting.

VIII · BEHIND GENIUS LOCI

Where art met olfactory technology.

Genius Loci was born from the meeting of two worlds. Coco Brun, artistic director and multidisciplinary artist, places craftsmanship and materiality at the centre of her work, and collaborates with artisans through residencies in Mexico, Italy, Thailand and Indonesia.

Byzance, Paris, develops custom olfactory devices for the luxury and beauty industries: dry-air diffusers, scented cloud generators, drop dispensers. Twenty years of expertise for houses such as Hermès, Chanel, LVMH, Diptyque and Amouage.

Each project is conceived as a coherent whole: design, scent, light, craftsmanship.

IX · THE ESSENTIAL

Genius Loci is not distributed. It is found.

In the workshop of a Breton basket-maker, in the cellar of a Murano glass master, in the forest of a resin gatherer in Lapland. Not a scented object: the memory of a place, distilled into matter.

We would be delighted to explore how Genius Loci could enrich your world.
